Just click on the "Interactive Coaching Log" option on the main menu bar above and follow the instructions to set up a free account.

Bristol City Centre Triathlon

Race report Bristol City Centre Triathlon 22 August 2010

I am in my second full season of triathlon and my first season of Sprint (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) events. Since January, with the help of Steve’s coaching and training plans, I have made steady progress and at each race I have learned something new. My times may not be brilliant but my confidence, especially in open water, has grown and I see this first year under Steve’s guidance as the one where a solid foundation is being built.

The Bristol City Centre Triathlon was organised by BAD Tri in partnership with Bristol City Council who organise the established Bristol half marathon and Bristol 10K races. The 2010 race was a small Sprint distance pilot race on closed roads in order to have a rehearsal before building up to a high entry capacity Standard distance race in 2011.

This was the first time I’d entered a city centre race – usually we’re away off in the countryside with a few bewildered dog walkers for spectators! The setting for the event did not disappoint; the Cumberland Basin is the last dock in the centre of Bristol before the huge lock gates open into the navigable River Avon. Just around the corner was the magnificent SS Great Britain. The bike and run course was the A4 Portway, closed for the event and with the imposing Clifton Suspension Bridge looking down upon us.

Mavic Tri Helium

Mavic Tri Helium Bike Shoes

Mavic are highly renowned for their excellent wheel sets catering to all budgets and training/racing requirements.
They have also been making other bicycle components and trip computer accessories for quite some time too. In recent years they have ventured into the markets for cycle clothing and shoes and as triathletes we should feel very privileged that they decided to address our specific needs as part of their performance shoe development plans.

If you follow the ITU World Championship Series and the World Cup events you have probably noticed a number of the pro triathletes wearing bright yellow bike shoes – unmistakably Mavic Tri Helium shoes – and I have to say that I suspect they are not just wearing them as part of a sponsorship arrangement, because now that I have test ridden them for a few weeks I am hooked – the Mavic Tri Helium has set a very high bar and every bike shoe I wear from now on will have to meet or exceed those standards for comfort, support, rigidity of the sole for power transfer, weight and ease of fitting (during the high speed transition phases of short course triathlon events).

Junior Summer Camp Day Three

Day Three:

I'm flabbergasted, delighted & knackered; the kids on Tri Camp had a grey miserable day for an itinerary of open water swimming, a mini-tri & group bike ride on the open roads...

While we waited for the wet suit hire shack to open (an hour later than we anticipated - but no worries, it was still in time for plenty of swim practice) we did a recce cross country lap on the bikes - really quite tiring terrain, but they would see it again as the centre piece to the mini tri event, so they could at least make a judgement call on which grass tracks to take

Wetsuits on, quick safety briefing and two options to choose from; swim out to the first set of green bouys in the boating lake with one of the safety kayaks (paddled by Claire - many thanks), or swim back and forth in the shallows gaining confidence with Mel (swimming) and Val in another kayak (offering free rides on the front if you're feeling tired! bonus).

Back to the jetty for more tips and then more practice close proximity swimming in a group formation, and learning about sighting techniques.

By now it was cold and wet out of the lake and you see that there were mixed feelings of cold, tired, elation and anticipation - it was time to get on with their first open water mini triathlon:

Different distances for the different abilities and age groups coupled with a quick handicap scheme so that they would all finish within a few minutes of each other and they were off!

Junior Summer Camp Day Two

Day Two:

Kicked off the morning with a bike maintenance interactive session (Thanks to Dave of Pitsford Cycles) - even that got competitive with a race to see who could strip down a wheel, rebuild it and inflate to 40 PSI (mountain bike tyre)! A valuable lesson that less haste = more speed.....

The kids were rewarded for their participation with a multitool and a set of tyre levers each, which was a nice surprise from Pitsford Cycles.

Then we organised ourselves into to two groups for a lap of the ressy, the older lads working intervals and circling back to the youngsters for a recovery before hitting the next hard effort.
